Print Club London: Finished piece

Screen print

Photographed

This was a very quick one day brief for me which was a nice break from doing the longer briefs. I am happy with how it turned out and really enjoyed experimenting with the glow in the dark ink although sadly I didn’t manage to capture the glow on camera.

Glow in the Dark:

Print Club London : concept development

Concept development:

Above are some quick sketches of possible ways to represent the band tall ships. I have focused on literally illustration a tall ship, but with the use of glow in the dark ink I am aiming to make the print more abstract by hiding certain bits so that the audience can't see the whole image unless it is dark and then they will be able to see it is a tall ship.

Out of the  three sketches above I am going to pursue the third sketch as I feel it will work best visually and look the most interesting as there is more going on.

Print Club London : Research

Screen Prints:

I have decided to research into screen printed posters themselves so that I gain enhance my appreciation further for the process. I want to notice details and study clever techniques that I can use myself. I started out researching by searching on the internet but then I realised that the best way to gain an understanding of screen print it to actual look at physical screen prints, so I turned to my walls and examined the screen printed work I have on my walls. It was great to look in find detail at the prints and it had given me a wider knowledge in uses of things like colour and I feel i know from looking at the prints how to and how not to use it effectively.

For this project I want to use ways of making the poster more abstract and I think one way of doing this is through the use of special inks like glow in the dark. From looking at screen prints that have got this special finishes on I can see it is very effective and is something that I will definitely explore to use.

Sailers / Ships:

As this band is called 'Tallships' and I want to represent their name literally but in an abstract way I have been looking directly at ships and sailers so that when it comes to drawing this poster I will feel well informed about how a ship looks / old sailer. All the boats I have looked at are truly beautiful and I think drawing them out will really do them justice as there is so much detail which will make the screen print look nice and tactile.

Print Club London : initial concept

Concept:

I have decided to create a poster about a bend called Tall Ships as whenI have seen them live I always get an erge to draw a tall ship and now I can forfill that erge. The artwork that Tallships use is always very beautiful and quite abstract so I want to step away from this and do something that is literal to their name whilst still embracing that element of an abstract that there visual image revolves around.

Plan:

Research into ships and sailers
Research into screen prints
Make drawing
screen print

Print Club London : Context / Audience

Audience:

The audience for this brief would be people who enjoy listning to music and who have an interest in exhibition and print . They would be both male and female age raging from 18 - 45.

Context:

This brief is a competition brief where the winners get to be exhibited in London. The context it there for a screen print specialist exhibition based in London. The above photos are from previous years of the exhibition. The show is set in a room that is very raw and natural which helps harness the beauty of the screen prints.

Print Club London : Initial brief

Brief:

Design A gig poster for a band of your choice. Poster must be screen printed and must not include the name of the band or title of the track.

This is a competition brief set by Print Club London. It is a chance to enter their annual blisters sound screen print exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is music and so the posters must all be designed to the theme of a certain music artist or to a specific song. The only catch is that no names of song or musician can be used on the poster it must remain anonymous.

We’re starting to prepare for our annual screen print poster show!
This year it’s Blisters: Sound Sessions.
We are now open for submissions and want to get the word out there to ANY illustrators/aspiring artists who want to take part.

Blisters: Sound Sessions
To fill you in, here are some details about our past shows and what we’re planning for 2014…
Following the success of the Blisters Blackout exhibition last year and the Secret Blisters and Blisters On My Fingers of previous years, Print Club London opens its doors on the 12th, 13th and 14th of September 2014 for its fifth annual screenprinted exhibition.

Blisters: SOUND SESSIONS – The Brief
1. Submit a poster in your own style inspired by your favourite band/song/musician/tour/gig.
2. The catch is, you cannot use the name of the band, song or musician! Use of other text is allowed, of course, but this should stand alone as an image/scene or typography.
3. Prepare artwork for a 500mm x 700mm print (B2 format).
4. Most importantly, your work must be COMPLETELY new and original for this project and never seen before! We will not accept any submissions that are displayed anywhere else, including your personal blog or portfolio.
See below for FAQs.

SCREENPRINTING
Our studios are open for successful submissions to print their own work, but if you aren’t printing this yourself do be aware that the more colours you choose the more expensive it is to produce.
There will be 40 exhibiting artists, each with a 40 edition and signed screenprints selling for £40 a pop!

The idea is that whether you are just out of college, up and coming or a well-known artist, everyone is on the same level platform and the prints speak for themselves.
Our aim is to take affordable art prints to a wider demographic, encouraging buyers to invest in original artwork

YCN : Pet plan - research

Dogs Dressed Like Their Owners by Sebastian Magnani

This is a project that has been really useful to look at. It shows humans as their pets in a fun and interactive way. It highlights to bonds and relationships humans have with their pets and this is something we want to high light through our pet plan party.

Pet treat recipe:

Below are a few recipe that we have researched into. One part of our pet party is that their is a chance to learn how to backs your loved pets healthy tasty treats . We felt that it would be benifical for us to learn about these treats and also find recipes for things like recipe cards

Primary research :

Firstly we conducted some secondary research into pet photography to gain a better understanding into it and then we tackled it ourselfs. We did not want to use other peoples photographs for this project as we wanted to capture a certain look and feel so thought It would be best to do the photos ourselfs using real life animals. By doing this we have got a better set of photos to work with that are real and genuine relationships that have been captured

Selection of pet related research :

Myself and Lisa have done a lot of research together into different pet related things from food to grooming to adopting (see Lisa's blog for more details). From looking into pet related design it has been useful to see how designers relate to both pet and owner in clever ways which is something we want to achieve they day is for both the pet an owner so it must seem appealing for both
